Learning with American Girl Kit Kittredge
by Faythe
Present Kit Kittredge stories and learn about the Great Depression time period. Kit is a 9 year old girl growing up during the Great Depression and dreaming of being a journalist.
The Kit Kittredge story can lead to many different topics. The Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, jouralism, recycling items into new items, gardening, arts and music at that time, and much more.
Create a garden. Children enjoy growing plants and nearly every child is naturally interested in growing things. Even if you do not have a green thumb there are many rewards for you and your children when growing plants.
You can grow a garden outside or grow herbs inside.
In the NotUrBizz Garden section there is a lot of information on gardening; from herbs to vegetables, what plants to plant to attract butterflies, and craft items to make with herbs.

Growing Herbs
Small pots and various herbs
Medium size box
Potting soil and small rocks (for drainage)
Have children place small rocks in the bottom of the pots to ensure good drainage. Add soil and plants. Water the plants and discuss with the child how often plants need watering.
Write the name of each plant on the medium size box so children can practice reading the plant names and identifying the plants visually. Let children decorate the box but not over the plant names. Place 3 potted plants in the box.
Have the child write out the plant name on a label for each plant. Place the label in the soil using fork tongs.
